“Should I do SEO or Google Ads?” It’s one of the most common questions we hear from plumbers, electricians, builders and other trades. The honest answer is that they do different jobs, and the right choice depends on how urgently you need work, your budget and how competitive your area is.

The short version

Google Ads SEO
Speed Can generate enquiries soon after launch Usually takes months to build
Cost model Pay for each click Invest in content and optimisation over time
When you stop Enquiries from ads stop Visibility tends to persist, then fade slowly

Google Ads put your business at the top of search results for the keywords and areas you choose. You pay when someone clicks.

Advantages

  • You can start appearing for searches soon after campaigns go live
  • You control the keywords, locations, times and budget
  • It’s easy to measure calls and form enquiries from ads
  • It suits urgent, high-intent searches: “emergency plumber”, “electrician near me”

Limitations

  • The moment you stop paying, the ads stop
  • Click costs can be high in competitive trades and cities
  • Poorly managed campaigns can waste money on irrelevant searches

SEO: slower, but it builds an asset

SEO improves your chances of appearing in the organic results and Google’s map listings without paying per click.

Advantages

  • No cost per click once you’re visible
  • Many people prefer to click organic and map results
  • A strong Google Business Profile and website keep working while you’re on the tools
  • Improvements tend to build on each other over time

Limitations

  • It takes time, usually months, not weeks
  • Nobody can guarantee rankings
  • It needs consistent effort: content, reviews, technical upkeep

Which should you start with?

A sensible approach for many trades looks like this:

  1. Fix the foundations first. A fast, clear tradie website and a complete Google Business Profile help both SEO and ads perform better.
  2. Use Google Ads if you need work now: particularly for urgent services, while tracking every call and enquiry.
  3. Build SEO in parallel. Local SEO, service pages and reviews improve your organic visibility over time.
  4. Rebalance as you learn. As organic enquiries grow, you may choose to reduce ad spend or focus it on your most profitable jobs.

If you’re booked out months ahead, you may not need ads at all. SEO and reviews might be enough. If you’re starting out in a competitive area, ads can help you get established.

What about Meta Ads?

Facebook and Instagram ads work differently: they reach people who aren’t actively searching. They can suit visual trades such as landscaping, painting, and bathroom and kitchen renovations, where before-and-after photos do the selling. For urgent trades, search intent usually wins. How long does SEO take for a tradie website?

It varies with competition, location and your website's starting point. Meaningful improvement typically takes months rather than weeks.
